Masons' Marks in St Andrews

A mason's mark is a symbol found in dressed stone in buildings and structures.  There are two types of mark - a layout mark that helps identify the position of the stone in the structure and a signature mark that identifies the mason or workshop that worked that piece.

The signature mark helps identify who should be paid for the work.
